Everybody has several moments they never forget. Certain pictures/stories are stuck in our head, we know what we were doing when that certain thing happened. There’s a handful of things that jump out to me… Sep 11, 2001 is the most obvious one that most of us can relate to. Watching video clips of the devesasting 7.0 earthquake in Hati had me reflecting on a time that I will never forget.
December 28, 1994. Off the Northeast coast of Japan a huge 7.8 earthquake rocked our house. It was early in the morning, I was asleep still, so it must have been 7amish. We lived in base housing at the time, and i remember it was sleety outside & obviously pretty damn cold. I woke up as soon as the pretremors started, and by the time my parents came upstairs to see if I was ok, it turned into a massive quake, practically throwing my entire room upside down. The quake lasted between 30-45 seconds, but it felt like an eternity. It was one hell of a quake, and it will always be forgotten because 2 and a half weeks later, a 6.8 earthquake rocked Kobe, Japan. I’ve been through a lot of earthquakes, several hurricanes & typhoons, tornados, blizzards, hail storms, droughts, excessive heat, and almost any other natural disaster you can think of, but December 28, 1994 will always be on my mind.
